Two credit types: PD hours and graduate-level semester credits
PD hours
Professional development (hours-based) courses
These courses award PD hours and a signed certificate of completion. Model Teaching is a pre-approved PD provider in Texas (CPE credits, TEA CPE# 902-391), New York (CTLE credits, CTLE# 23730), Pennsylvania (Act 48 hours), Montana (OPI PDUs), Nevada (clock hours), and Illinois (ISBE hours through our NEIU partnership). Other states like Tennessee and Colorado accept PD hours with the certificate Model Teaching provides. Most other states accept graduate-level credits from a regionally accredited university partner for recertification or license renewal.
Certificate of completion
- Course title
- Hours earned
- Completion date
- Unique reference number
Graduate-level credit
Graduate-level, university-partnered courses
These courses award semester credits from a regionally accredited university partner and include an official transcript and letter grade. Most state departments of education accept regionally accredited credits for license renewal, and most school districts accept them for salary advancement or lane change. Up to 9 credits may be applied toward a Master of Education degree through Augustana University.

Renewing a license Your goal
Continuing education for teacher license renewal
Most states require teachers to complete a set number of professional development hours or continuing education credits within each renewal cycle. Model Teaching courses can meet those requirements in most states.
Here is how license renewal works with Model Teaching:
- Find your state on the PD Requirements by State page to confirm the credit type and number of hours you need.
- Choose individual courses from the course menu, or purchase a PD hours bundle (2 to 300 hours) or a graduate-level credit bundle (1 to 45 credits) to complete all courses needed within your renewal requirement.
- Complete your courses at your own pace. You have one year of access from the date of purchase.
- Download your certificate for PD courses, or pay for credits and request your university transcript for graduate-level courses. Certificates are typically issued within 1 to 2 business days and include the provider name, course title, hours earned, completion date, and a unique reference number.
- Submit your certificates or transcript to your state licensing agency or district according to their process, and complete any additional requirements for your individual state.
Start with your state
Check your state requirementsIf your state requires credits rather than hours, the graduate-level courses described in the next section are accepted by most state departments of education for renewal.
Advancing your salary Your goal
Salary advancement with graduate-level credits
Many school districts place teachers on a salary schedule that rewards graduate credits earned beyond a degree, often at set intervals such as +15 or +30 credits. Moving to a new column on that schedule is called a lane change. Model Teaching university-partnered courses provide the graduate-level semester credits that most districts accept for this purpose.

- About $87 per credit
How the credit bundles work
- Choose the number of credits you need (1 to 45) and pay a one-time registration fee.
- Pick any courses from the graduate-level menu, from any university partner.
- Complete your courses at your own pace. You have one year of access from the date of purchase.
- When you are finished, pay the $70 per credit processing fee for your university course and grade posting. After your university posts your grades, you will receive instructions for requesting your official transcript from the university.
Pay as you go
Because you pay as you go, you can better control the timing of your transcript and can match it to your district’s application deadline within your one year access period. Transcripts are processed on a rolling basis, so you do not have to wait for the end of a semester to begin the course and grade posting process.
Check with your district first
Before you enroll, check your district’s salary schedule and pre-approval process to ensure your choices satisfy your district’s rules. Each district sets its own rules for which courses qualify.

This course was exceptional. I take a lot of PD classes, and most of them are too broad, too basic, and do not offer practical strategies that can be applied in the classroom. As an experienced educator, I am always looking for courses that challenge me and help me improve my practice with scientifically-backed strategies. This course has definitely done that. Modules were simple, short, but packed with useful information. Reflections were manageable and meaningful, and the final assignment felt accomplishable and purposeful. I really enjoyed the course and would recommend it to others.
Excellent use of time!
This was hands down one of the best courses I have taken. Every 5 years I dread renewing my teaching license because of the pd/ce credits and hours. But this class was the exception. It was useful. Well structured. The work on my part was just right. Superb. Will be recommending this class and modelteaching.com to colleagues.
Great course!
Amazing, effective and self-paced learning at home. Loved the convenience and the practical activities.
This is a fantastic, quick course!
Even after many years as an educator, it is great to refresh my knowledge and skills regularly. This course provided great examples for techniques and concepts to support diverse, at-risk students in a concise fashion. Through the synthesis of journal articles and the course implementation plan, I was able to create plans that I can implement in my own classroom.
I loved this course!
The way the modules and videos are structured is well-organized and logical. I was able to navigate through each lesson, activity and task without much frustration or confusion. This is my second course with Model Teaching and I will be taking more in the future.
