The Arkansas Department of Education’s Office of Professional Development now requires educators to complete a minimum of 36 hours, or 6 days of professional development training per school year to maintain licensure. Arkansas School Board Members are required to obtain at least 6 hours of professional development per year. Educators must maintain written verification of all training by completing the Documentation of Professional Development For Renewal of a Standard Teaching License. They will need to furnish all training records to the Arkansas Department of Education each year.
If a teacher's license has been expired for more than a year they will need to complete 60 hours of professional development training. This requirement must be completed within a year after requesting a license renewal. These teachers will need to complete a Verification for Individual Professional Development Training Form to document their training.
Professional development hours may be earned in a variety of ways, including through college courses, conferences, mentoring and independent study.
Teacher’s Standard Teaching License will automatically be renewed by the Arkansas Department of Education in the fall of its last effective year if you meet ALL of the following requirements:
- Hold a valid Standard Teaching License
- Teach in an Arkansas public school during the year in which the license expires
- Have clearance of the criminal background check by the Arkansas State Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation on file
- Have clearance of the Child Maltreatment Central Registry check on file
- Pay the renewal fee of $100
- Show verification of completion of 60 hours of Professional Development annually
