Florida Teacher License Renewal & Certification Renewal Requirements

Florida teachers can utilize Model Teaching university-partnered courses to earn academic credit for their license renewal or salary advancement needs. All Model Teaching university-partnered courses provide graduate-level semester credit for license renewal or salary advancement purposes. You may choose any Model Teaching university-partnered courses of interest or enroll in one of our Course Bundle Packs – the most cost-effective way to earn credits.

  • Regionally-Accredited Semester Credits

Model Teaching offers great options for Florida teachers to earn semester credits from accredited universities, including the required content area of “Students with Disabilities (SWD)”.

The Florida Department of Education requires 6 semester hours of college credit to include at least 1 semester hour in teaching students with disabilities during each renewal period. The Florida Department of Education has guidelines concerning acceptable college credit equivalencies for Renewal, including guidelines for obtaining approval on the fldoe.org website.

Acceptable College Credit Equivalencies for Renewal that apply to Model Teaching Courses:

  • College level credits used for certificate renewal must be awarded by an accredited or approved institution, or the American Council on Education (ACE), and must be reflected on an official transcript.
    Regional Accrediting Associations Acceptable According to Florida Department of Education:

Regional accrediting associations. The regional accrediting associations are as follows:

  • The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
  • The Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools
  • The New England Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools
  • The North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, Now the HLC
  • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
  • The Western Association of Schools & Colleges

While we always recommend you confirm your state or district’s license renewal requirements, we recommend choosing any of our regionally-accredited university partnered courses or course bundle packs.  These courses are in partnership with regionally-accredited universities and include an official transcript.  Florida license renewal also requires completion of one credit in the content area of “Students With Disabilities”, several of our courses include this content area credit, as well as all of our University-Partnered Bundle Packs (See Below)

Professional Development topics appropriate for renewal include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching students with disabilities (SWD)
  • Exceptional student education
  • Content-specific to the subject area(s)
  • Methods or education strategies specific to the subject area(s)
  • Methods of teaching reading and literacy skills acquisition
  • Computer literacy, computer applications, or computer education
  • ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)
  • Drug abuse, child abuse and neglect, or student dropout prevention
  • Training related to the goals of the Florida K-20 System, such as: Content –
  • English, economics, mathematics, science, social sciences, foreign languages, humanities, global economy, technology, ecology, first aid, health, or safety.
  • Classroom Strategies – Cooperative learning, problem-solving skills, critical-thinking skills, classroom management, child development, collaboration techniques for working with families, social services, child guidance and counseling, teaching reading, or educational assessments, etc.
  • School Administration Accountability – Instructional design, leadership skills, school and community relations, school finance, school facilities, school law, or school organization
  • Career and Adult Education Accountability – Adult learning, principles of adult or career and technical education, career and technical education for students with special needs, or career and technical guidance

Salary Advancement Information for Teachers

Generally, school districts across the country provide various salary scale advancement opportunities to teachers that often includes participation in graduate-level professional development. Our university-partnered, graduate-level courses are an excellent and cost-effective way for you to earn the continuing education academic credit you need.

All Model Teaching university partners are regionally-accredited universities who offer our courses in partnership for graduate-level, academic and/or post-bachelorette credit.  Most states and school districts allow teachers to earn this type of credit as part of advancing in the salary scale.  Please check with your district’s policies regarding continuing education for salary advancement prior to enrolling.
