Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate Renewal & Professional Development Requirements

Thousands of Pennsylvania teachers utilize Model Teaching courses every year to earn Act 48 Credit hours for license renewal. All Model Teaching regular Professional Development (PD, Clock Hour) courses are pre-approved by Penn DOE to earn Act 48 credits for license renewal. You may choose any Model Teaching courses of interest or enroll in one of our Course Bundle Packs – the most cost-effective way to earn your Act 48 credits.

How It Works:

Model Teaching is an approved Act 48 PD Provider. As you complete your courses, we submit your earned hours to the Penn DOE PERMS system. You will see your hours appear in your Penn DOE account within one or less after each completed course.

ACT 48 REQUIREMENTS

  • All educators holding a Pennsylvania public school certification, whether currently working or not must earn 6 credits of college study, OR 180 hours of continuing professional development education programs through an PDE approved provider every 5 years.
  • This 180 hours of PD are required every 5 years in order to maintain a Pennsylvania teaching certificate and includes the following certificate types: Instructional I & II, Educational Specialist I & II, Administrative, Supervisory, Letters of Eligibility and all Vocational Certificates.

All Model Teaching courses are pre-approved.  You may select from individual courses from our Course Menu or select one of our cost-effective bundle packages, including our cost-effective Pennsylvania Teacher Act 48 Course Bundle Pack (See Below).  For Pennsylvania teacher license renewal, you do NOT need to take our academic-partnered graduate-level courses, only our regular Professional Development courses.

Yes, Model Teaching will automatically submit your Act 48 hours to Penn DOE.  We upload our teachers’ submitted course information approximately every 7 days.  You will automatically see your completed courses populate your account as you complete our courses.

ACCEPTABLE CREDITS

All Model Teaching courses are pre-approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) for Act 48 credit hours.  You will receive a certificate of completion at the conclusion of each course.  Model Teaching will record your earned hours with the Pennsylvania Department of Education. 

Teachers can also utilize graduate-level credit.  The Pennsylvania Department of Education equates each semester collegiate credit to 30 PD hours and each quarter collegiate credit to 20 PD hours.

CONVERTING FROM A LEVEL I TO LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE

The PDE requires 24 semester hours of academic credit as one of the requirements to convert from a Level I to a Level II certificate.  Model Teaching offers academic credit courses from regionally-accredited universities for this purpose.  According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), 1-semester credit = 30 continuing education hours.  View our Academic Credit Courses to find courses need to earn these credits.

Salary Advancement Information for Teachers

Our university-partnered, graduate-level courses are an excellent and cost-effective way for you to earn the continuing education academic credit you need.

All Model Teaching university partners are regionally-accredited universities who offer our courses in partnership for graduate-level, academic and/or post-bachelorette credit.  Most states and school districts allow teachers to earn this type of credit as part of advancing in the salary scale.  Please check with your district’s policies regarding continuing education for salary advancement prior to enrolling.
