Rhode Island offers a three-tiered certification process. Teachers first must earn an Initial Educator Certificate, which is valid for 3 years. If the teacher has received successful evaluations through the Local Educator Evaluation system, completed the requisite professional development (if required), they will receive their 5-year Professional Educator Certificate.
Professional Educator Certificate
If an educator has taught for 5 years and received 5 ratings of “Effective” through the Local Educator Evaluation system they may renew their 5 year Professional Educator Certificate. If the educator has received 5 ratings of “highly effective” through the Local Educator Evaluation System, they may renew their Professional Educator Certificate as an Advanced Educator Certificate for 7 years.
Advanced Educator Certificates may be renewed every 7 years with “Highly Effective” ratings as described above.
