  • The basic reading skills pyramid and how these reading skills develop from kindergarten through fifth grade
  • A brief overview of several reading assessments that are commonly used to determine a student’s reading level
  • Common reading behaviors you can expect to see at each elementary grade level

Section 2 – Defining Explicit Instruction

  • The meaning of explicit instruction
  • The relevant research that supports this strategy
  • What a typical explicit instruction reading lesson looks like in an elementary classroom

Section 3 – Modeling & Guided Practice

  • Activities that build within the gradual release model of explicit instruction

Section 4 – Independent Practice
