Course Details

In this course, teachers will learn how to use highly creative chain reaction inventions to promote student creativity, reasoning, problem-solving, and collaboration. You will learn how innovation can be taught when it is planned as purposeful enrichment, even if the core curriculum is already full. You will learn how divergent and convergent thinking explain why older students often become less creative, and then we will provide a step-by-step plan for bringing a Rube Goldberg-style project to your campus or classroom.

Key Questions Covered in This Course:

  • How do you foster creativity and reasoning in your students?
  • How can implementing chain reaction projects fit into your current schedule or enrichment time?
  • What planning steps are required before you can implement a chain-reaction or Rube Goldberg project in your classroom?
  • How will you guide students during the build, and how will your students showcase their final projects?

This Course Will Teach You:

  • How to connect creativity to divergent and convergent thinking so you can give students open tasks, let them generate many ideas, and guide them toward one workable solution.
  • How to choose from several time models such as six hour, twelve hour, or twenty four hour builds and how to match each time frame to the right level of project complexity.
  • How to plan for space and materials, starting with small tabletop builds and then expanding to larger room builds when students are ready.
  • How to design short mini lessons for brainstorming, prototyping, behavior, and design elements while you circulate and coach student groups.
  • How to use the SCAMPER method to help students revise and improve their inventions when a chain reaction does not work.
