Many English Language Learners struggle academically, particularly with literacy (in all content areas) and math concepts. This course will explain the benefits of implementing peer tutoring strategies with ELLs and give participants several easy-to-implement strategies for pairing fluent English speakers with ELLs that they can implement at any grade level and in any content area. Peer tutoring is a flexible grouping strategy where a student that excels academically is paired with a struggling student to reinforce academic skills or knowledge. This course will focus on peer tutoring strategies focused on literacy (reading and writing) and math skills because most other content areas have a strong foundation of these skills. Additionally, while the strategies in this course can technically be used with any student (high achieving, struggling academically, special education, etc.), this course is specific to supporting English Language Learners. Due to the language barrier they face, ELLs often need more focused intervention and often relate well to their peers.
You Will Learn:
The definition of and academic / socio-emotional benefits of peer tutoring, especially for ELL students.
The best situations to utilize peer tutoring and how to select, train, and incentivize your peer tutors.
Multiple peer tutoring strategies to help improve reading fluency, comprehension, writing, as well as math achievement.
Methods to monitor your peer tutors and track performance, as well as how to determine the overall effectiveness of your peer tutoring program.
Course Guiding Question:
How can I incorporate peer tutoring as an instructional strategy to improve the literacy and math skills of my ELL students?
