Course Description:
(2 Graduate Semester Credits) Effective, research-based reading instruction is critical to your students’ success. This course will provide you with an outline for what strong reading instruction and intervention look like in the classroom. You will learn about the main principles of the science of reading, why explicit, systematic, and sequential instruction is a critical component of your reading plan, and why multisensory strategies are critical for working on reading performance. You will also explore support for students struggling with reading or those with reading disabilities such as dyslexia, and learn about intervention methods and accommodations that are critical for success. You will leave this course with an understanding of what effective reading support looks like as you reflect on your own practices and plan for the future.

9 credits of coursework through Model Teaching can also be applied toward Augustana’s Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree as part of Augustana’s learner-designed concentration.
