Course Sections What You Will Learn

This course will explain the importance of writing practice for English Language Learners and provide strategies and methods you can incorporate throughout lessons and across content areas. You will learn 6 methods to supporting writing specific to improving literacy in English Language Learners and will plan for how to implement those strategies into your existing lesson plans. You will also learn how to monitor the progress of your ELLs to make sure they are improving their writing skills.

  • About the struggle ELL students have in different content areas and how writing plays a role in all content areas.
  • Six simple strategies that can support the writing skills of ELLs across all content and subject areas.
  • How to best monitor the progress of your ELLs.
  • Strategies such as buddy writing, daily writing, and interactive writing as great ways to improve the writing fluency and confidence of ELLs.
  • How exposing students to quality mentor texts and providing them with sentence stems or frames are excellent ways to scaffold the process of writing.
  • Vocabulary development as a critical part of literacy development for ELLs.
  • The importance of monitoring the progress of your ELLs and three strategies for monitoring progress.
