ACTIVE MONITORING & DATA COLLECTION IN THE CLASSROOM – NEIU COURSE

(15 ISBE Clock Hours) This course provides an introductory look at how to actively monitor students throughout the instructional process and how to analyze data collected in order to better support students. You will learn how to determine the purpose of monitoring students through whole group, small group, collaborative, and independent learning activities and will analyze multiple data collection methods for classroom use. Finally, you will learn how to collect data, analyze the data for trends, and regroup students to help better teach mastery of core concepts. At the end of you will build a data collection lesson plan, ready for immediate use in their classroom. You will apply these ideas to an implementation process through an action plan design, resource development and analysis of research to view applicability in the classroom. A final implementation plan will allow you to showcase how you plan to specifically implement course ideas into a current or future classroom.

At the conclusion of this course, you will earn 15 ISBE clock hours, including a signed ISBE certificate.

Continuing Education hours through Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) are offered as ISBE clock hours and indicated as continuing education clock hours on a University provided certificate. Although offered in partnership with NEIU, they do not result in graduate- level or academic credit and cannot be used toward a degree program. These courses are primarily intended for recertification or re-licensure and continuing education for teachers in the state of Illinois.

Northeastern Illinois University is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. It is recognized as an approved provider of ISBE clock hours by the state of Illinois.

Section 1 – An Introduction to Active Monitoring

Learn the process of active monitoring and how to look for objective evidence of student mastery of concepts, then learn how to identify an activity in your content area and grade-level where you could implement active monitoring.

Section 2 – Data Collection

Learn about and analyze multiple data collection tracking documents and a data collection planning guide to help you select the data collection method appropriate for you.

Section 3 – Addressing Misconceptions

Learn how to analyze your data for trends and identify areas for improvement in the lesson so you can appropriate address student misunderstandings. Then, learn how to plan for new student grouping and re-teaching based on data trends.
