NV Teacher License Renewal Requirements

Nevada educators can renew a Standard (5-year) or Professional (6-10-year, depending on degree) license by completing either 90 clock hours of continuing education, 6 semester credits, or a combination that equals those amounts within the license period. Renewal is submitted in OPAL (Online Portal for Applications and Licensure).

Standard License Terms:

  • Standard license: valid 5 years.
  • Professional license: 6 years (master’s), 8 years (education specialist), up to 10 years (doctorate).
  • Retiree license: valid 10 years.

Renewal Coursework/hours:

  • Licenses issued on/after Sept 16, 2024: complete 90 clock hours or 6 semester credits or a combination during the license period.
  • Licenses issued before Sept 16, 2024: complete 15 hours per year of the license period (e.g., 75 hours for a 5-year license).

Acceptable PD/Credits for Nevada Renewal:

Nevada accepts a range of activities as renewal credit, provided they are relevant and (when applicable) from approved providers:

  • Clock Hours Earned from an NV DOE-approved provider: Professional development coursework from a provider pre-approved through the NV DOE, as listed on the NV-approved providers list. (What We Recommend)
  • Accredited college/university coursework (including correspondence/online) directly related to your license, shortage areas, or part of an approved advanced degree. Credit conversion: 1 semester credit = 15 hours, so 6 credits = 90 hours.
  • State/National conferences approved to offer CE hours; NDE in-service; approved provider courses under Nevada’s rules.

  • Professional organization courses specific to your discipline from organizations on NDE’s maintained list.

  • Supervised travel (pre-approved 30+ days in advance) directly related to your licensure area (credit awarded only for one month or longer).

  • NBCT (National Board Certification for Teachers) completion counts for 6 credits toward renewal.

The most cost-effective option for teachers who need the maximum number of clock hours is our Build Your Own Bundle Pack (See Below).

Model Teaching believes that teachers should be provided with affordable, high-quality opportunities for professional development, whether they are seeking salary advancement, renewing their teaching license, or simply improving their instructional effectiveness.  Our streamlined and standardized course structure allows us to deliver high-quality, evaluated courses to teachers at costs far below the industry standard.  Also, by bundling our courses together, we are able to significantly reduce our overall costs – passing this down to our valued teachers.  Chat with us if you have any questions about how the courses work.

Model Teaching courses focus on providing convenient, self-paced courses for K-12 Educators.  With this, we know that teachers have very busy schedules.  Our courses do not require long reading assignments or open-ended, low-level essays.  Rather, all lessons and activities are focused on in-classroom implementation and include short quizzes and reflections.  Reflections always include pre-completed samples to reference as well as example submissions from other teachers who have completed the course- so you will always have many examples to help you complete any reflections quickly.  We build our courses to reinforce the important concepts we are teaching through meaningful activities that can be completed quickly while still meeting the requirements of state and district standards for continuing education.

We estimate course length based on an assessment of how long it would take to complete the course in a live workshop.  However, most teachers can complete the courses much more quickly online.  Of note, you will still earn your full PD hours for every course, even if you complete your course more quickly than the courses’ estimated completion time.

Yes, absolutely.  Our courses do not require access to a classroom or students to complete.  However, if you ever return to the classroom you will have a broad collection of resources and tools to put your new training into practice- if you wish.

For licenses issued before September 16, 2024, the requirement is 15 hours per year of the license period. One semester credit equals 15 clock hours. Hours can be earned at any time during the licensure period through an NV DOE-approved provider like Model Teaching.

The most cost-effective option for earning Nevada renewal clock hours is a course bundle pack from an approved provider like Model Teaching. The Build Your Own Bundle Pack lets you pick any courses from the full PD course menu to meet your required hours at a lower per-hour cost than individual courses. You only need Model Teaching's regular PD courses for NV license renewal—not graduate-level courses.
A Nevada Standard teaching license is valid for 5 years. Professional license terms vary by degree: 6 years for a master's, 8 years for an education specialist, and up to 10 years for a doctorate. Retiree licenses are valid for 10 years. Educators with a Retiree License or verified retired status with 15 or more years of Nevada teaching experience may be exempt from renewal hour requirements.

Pre-approved supervised travel of one month or longer that relates to your licensure area also qualifies. National Board Certification completion counts for 6 credits. Employer-provided continuing education earned during the contract day is also allowed.
Educators with an initial Nevada license must complete 3 credits (45 hours) in Multicultural Education from the state-approved course matrix before renewal. If you still have not completed it, you will need to finish before your license can be renewed.
Yes. Model Teaching offers self-paced online courses that Nevada teachers can access immediately after enrollment, any time and from anywhere. You will also need to complete a new fingerprint card or electronic fingerprint scan through an approved Livescan vendor, and pay the licensure application fee. A criminal background check is required for all reapplicants.
