Oregon Teacher License Renewal & Re-Certification Requirements

Hundreds of Oregon teachers utilize Model Teaching courses every year to earn academic credits for license renewal. All Model Teaching university-partnered courses provide graduate-level semester credit for license renewal or salary advancement purposes. You may choose any Model Teaching university-partnered courses of interest or enroll in one of our Course Bundle Packs – the most cost-effective way to earn credits.

  • Regionally-Accredited Semester Credits

Model Teaching offers great options for Oregon teachers to earn semester credits from accredited universities in order to renew or maintain their teaching certification.

The Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission issues several different teaching licenses based on subject area and expertise. In general, teachers may earn a Preliminary Teaching License, Professional Teaching License or Legacy Teaching License, based on the level of experience of the teacher.

Preliminary Teaching License

The Preliminary Teaching License is issued to new teachers who have completed a Commission-approved teacher preparation program. The Preliminary Teaching License signifies that the educator is a novice teacher who has not met the advanced competencies and experience requirements for the Professional Teaching License. The Preliminary Teaching License must be renewed every 3 years by completing 75 continuing professional development units (PDUs) You may advance to a Professional Teaching License by meeting several requirements. While we always recommend you confirm your state or district’s license renewal requirements, we recommend choosing any of our regionally-accredited university partnered courses or course bundle packs.  These courses are in partnership with regionally-accredited universities and include an official transcript.

Professional Teaching License:
A professional teaching license must be renewed every 5 years by completing 125 continuing professional development units (PDUs)

Legacy Teaching License:
A Legacy Teaching License must be renewed every 3 years by completing 75 professional development units (PDUs)

Acceptable Professional Development Units (PDUs)

  • Completing college courses;
  • Attending workshops and conferences; and
  • Participating in other learning activities intended to increase the attendee’s effectiveness as an educator.

PDUs are calculated as follows:

  • 1 hour of continuing PDU activity = 1 PDU;
  • 1 quarter-hour of college credit = 20 PDUs; or
  • 1 semester hour of college credit = 30 PDUs.

Model Teaching offers courses provided through regionally-accredited university partners. These institutions are accredited by several accrediting agencies. Our courses should meet the requirements for Oregon teacher license renewal and Professional Development requirement hours (PDUs). All courses completed through our academic partners will include access to an official transcript from that academic institution for submission to any license-granting authority.

To request approval of our Non-university partnered PD and University-Partnered Academic Credit Courses, you may request approval using our Request Course Approval form and submit to the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission.
