ELL WRITING STRATEGIES: SIMPLE METHODS TO SUPPORT WRITING IN YOUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS – NEIU COURSE

(15 ISBE Clock Hours) This course will explain the importance of writing practice for English Language Learners and provide strategies and methods you can incorporate throughout lessons and across content areas. You will learn 6 methods to supporting writing specific to improving literacy in English Language Learners and will plan for how to implement those strategies into your existing lesson plans. You will design an action plan for your classroom, develop an additional resource to support your plan, and analyze research to support implementation in the classroom. The course ends with you designing an implementation plan designed to ensure you are successfully incorporating the lesson concepts, ideas, and resources into a future lesson.

Great course for supporting ELLs!

I am currently working on renewing my teaching certification with plans to teach 2nd grade next year. This course gave me a good overview of strategies for incorporating writing instruction into all content areas within my classroom. I will definitely use what I learned in my classroom next year!

At the conclusion of this course, you will earn 15 ISBE clock hours, including a signed ISBE certificate.

Continuing Education hours through Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) are offered as ISBE clock hours and indicated as continuing education clock hours on a University provided certificate. Although offered in partnership with NEIU, they do not result in graduate- level or academic credit and cannot be used toward a degree program. These courses are primarily intended for recertification or re-licensure and continuing education for teachers in the state of Illinois.

Northeastern Illinois University is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. It is recognized as an approved provider of ISBE clock hours by the state of Illinois.

  • That strategies such as buddy writing, daily writing, and interactive writing are great ways to improve the writing fluency and confidence of ELLs.
  • How exposing students to quality mentor texts and providing them with sentence stems or frames are excellent ways to scaffold the process of writing.
  • That vocabulary development is a critical part of literacy development for ELLs.

Section 3 – Monitoring Progress

  • The importance of monitoring the progress of your ELLs.
