Model Teaching courses focus on providing convenient, self-paced courses for K-12 Educators.  With this, we know that teachers have very busy schedules.  Our courses do not require long reading assignments or open-ended, low-level essays.  Rather, all lessons and activities are focused on in-classroom implementation and include short quizzes and reflections.  Reflections always include pre-completed samples to reference as well as example submissions from other teachers who have completed the course- so you will always have many examples to help you complete any reflections quickly.  We build our courses to reinforce the important concepts we are teaching through meaningful activities that can be completed quickly while still meeting the requirements of state and district standards for continuing education.

We estimate course length based on an assessment of how long it would take to complete the course in a live workshop.  However, most teachers can complete the courses much more quickly online.  Of note, you will still earn your full PD hours for every course, even if you complete your course more quickly than the courses’ estimated completion time.

Yes, absolutely.  Our courses do not require access to a classroom or students to complete.  However, if you ever return to the classroom you will have a broad collection of resources and tools to put your new training into practice- if you wish.

Frequently Asked Questions

New York CTLE requirements, license renewal, and professional development

New York teachers with a Professional certificate in classroom teaching, educational leadership, or a Level III Teaching Assistant certificate must complete 100 hours of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) during each five-year registration period. You can earn hours at any point during the registration period through a NYSED-approved CTLE sponsor such as Model Teaching. One semester credit from a regionally accredited university equals 15 CTLE clock hours.
NYSED requires that at least 15 percent of your CTLE hours (15 out of 100) focus on language acquisition addressing the needs of English language learners. This includes topics like co-teaching strategies and integrating language and content instruction. If you hold an ESOL or bilingual certificate, the requirement increases to 50 percent. Model Teaching offers several ELL and co-teaching courses that count toward this requirement.
Yes. Model Teaching is a NYSED-approved CTLE sponsor (CTLE# 23730) and is listed on the official NYSED Approved Provider list. All Model Teaching PD courses are pre-approved for CTLE credit across all subject areas. Every completed course includes a signed CTLE certificate with the information NYSED requires for your records.
The most cost-effective option is the Build Your Own CTLE Bundle from Model Teaching. You purchase a bundle of hours and then pick any courses from the full PD course menu until you have used your hours. There are no additional fees beyond the initial registration. You only need Model Teaching's regular PD courses for NY license renewal CTLEs—not graduate-level courses.
No. There is one CTLE requirement per educator, regardless of how many certificates you hold. If you have multiple Professional certificates, you still only need to complete a total of 100 CTLE hours during each five-year registration period. The hours just need to be completed through an approved CTLE sponsor.
No. CTLE hours completed before your current registration period or during a previous period cannot be carried over. You need to complete all 100 hours within your current five-year window. If you were inactive and not practicing for part of the period, the requirement drops to a minimum of 20 CTLE hours for each year you were actually practicing in an applicable school.
CTLE is required if you hold a Professional certificate in classroom teaching, a Professional certificate in educational leadership, or a Level III Teaching Assistant certificate. If you only hold a Permanent certificate with a Statement of Continued Eligibility and do not also hold a Professional or Level III TA certificate, you do not need to complete CTLE. School counselors, school psychologists, and school social workers with pupil personnel service certificates are also exempt.
Yes. Model Teaching courses are fully online and self-paced, so you can work through them on your own schedule from anywhere. Courses include short quizzes and reflections rather than lengthy reading assignments, and come with pre-completed samples and example submissions so you can finish quickly. You receive your full CTLE clock hours for each course even if you complete it faster than the estimated time. Access lasts for one full year after enrollment.
NYSED requires educators to keep their CTLE certificates and records for 8 years after completion. Model Teaching provides a signed CTLE certificate for every completed course, formatted with the information NYSED requires. You are responsible for tracking, reporting, and keeping your own CTLE documentation.
