The most cost-effective option for teachers who need the maximum number of CPE hours is our Texas Teacher Build Your Own Bundle Pack (See Below).

Model Teaching believes that teachers should be provided with affordable, high-quality opportunities for professional development, whether they are seeking salary advancement, renewing their teaching license, or simply improving their instructional effectiveness.  Our streamlined and standardized course structure allows us to deliver high-quality, evaluated courses to teachers at costs far below the industry standard.  Also, by bundling our courses together, we are able to significantly reduce our overall costs – passing this down to our valued teachers.  Call or chat with us if you have any questions about how the courses work.

Model Teaching courses focus on providing convenient, self-paced courses for K-12 Educators.  With this, we know that teachers have very busy schedules.  Our courses do not require long reading assignments or open-ended, low-level essays.  Rather, all lessons and activities are focused on in-classroom implementation and include short quizzes and reflections.  Reflections always include pre-completed samples to reference as well as example submissions from other teachers who have completed the course- so you will always have many examples to help you complete any reflections quickly.  We build our courses to reinforce the important concepts we are teaching through meaningful activities that can be completed quickly while still meeting the requirements of state and district standards for continuing education.

We estimate course length based on an assessment of how long it would take to complete the course in a live workshop.  However, most teachers can complete the courses much more quickly online.  Of note, you will still earn your full PD hours for every course, even if you complete your course more quickly than the courses’ estimated completion time.

Yes, absolutely.  Our courses do not require access to a classroom or students to complete.  However, if you ever return to the classroom you will have a broad collection of resources and tools to put your new training into practice- if you wish.

Our PD courses are all TEA-approved and you may use our courses to earn CPE hours for your teaching waiver.

Frequently Asked Questions

Texas teacher certificate renewal — CPE hours, TEA requirements, and how to get started

Classroom teachers must complete 150 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) clock hours every five years to renew a standard Texas teaching certificate. If you hold an administrative or student services certificate (principal, counselor, librarian, or educational diagnostician), you need 200 CPE hours. Even if you hold multiple classroom certificates, the requirement stays at 150 hours. All CPE activities must come from a TEA-approved provider.
Texas requires classroom teachers to complete at least 25 percent (37.5 hours) of their CPE in each of four topic areas: collecting and analyzing data to improve classroom effectiveness, early warning indicators for students at risk of dropping out, digital learning and integrating technology, and educating diverse student populations. All educators must also complete training on students with disabilities including dyslexia. Any hours earned above the 37.5-hour minimum in one topic count toward your overall 150-hour total.
Texas accepts several types of CPE activities from approved providers: workshops, conferences, in-service training, and online courses. College coursework counts at 15 CPE hours per semester credit. Independent study is capped at 20 percent of your total (30 hours for teachers). Mentoring another educator is capped at 30 percent (45 hours). Developing or presenting a CPE activity is capped at 10 percent (15 hours). At least 80 percent of your CPE should relate directly to the certificates you are renewing.
Log into the TEA Login (TEAL) system, click Applications, then select Renew a Standard Certificate. You will complete an online affidavit affirming that all CPE requirements have been met and pay the $20 renewal fee. TEA sends a reminder email six months before your expiration date. You do not submit CPE documentation unless selected for an audit, but you must keep records of all CPE activities for five years.
If you do not renew by your expiration date, TEA places your certificate on inactive status. You can still renew an inactive certificate by completing your CPE hours and paying the standard renewal fee plus a late fee. You will not need to retake any certification exams. TEA also offers hardship exemptions for documented health issues or other extenuating circumstances, which must be submitted by your employing school district on your behalf.
Yes. Texas educators who have attempted a TExES certification exam four or more times without passing may qualify for a waiver. The waiver requires completion of approved CPE activities related to the certification area. Model Teaching PD courses are TEA-approved and can be used to earn CPE hours that count toward waiver requirements. Each Model Teaching PD hour equals one CPE clock hour.
Yes. Model Teaching is a TEA-approved CPE provider listed on the official TEA approved providers list. All PD courses are pre-approved for CPE credit, and each completed course includes a certificate of completion with the provider name, course topic, date, and number of CPE hours. Model Teaching offers courses covering every TEA-required content area, including data analysis, digital learning, diverse populations, students with disabilities and dyslexia, dropout prevention, and appropriate boundaries.
The Texas Teacher Build Your Own CPE Bundle from Model Teaching lets you access the full course menu for a flat price. You pick any TEA-approved courses you need and work at your own pace for a full year. Since the bundle covers all required TEA content areas in one package, you can earn all 150 CPE hours without purchasing courses individually. For teachers who also want salary advancement, Model Teaching offers graduate-level credit bundles through regionally accredited university partners.
